Burkina Faso: 164 ORISA® water filters deployed by SIF to improve access to water
A critical humanitarian situation in the Cascades region
In Burkina Faso's Cascades region, access to drinking water remains a major challenge for rural and displaced populations. Recent conflicts and the isolation of certain areas have exacerbated the vulnerability of communities, forcing them to collect water from unimproved wells or often contaminated surface sources. As part of the humanitarian initiative led by Secours Islamique France (SIF), more than 100 ORISA® water purifiers were deployed in October 2024 to families, schools and isolated areas, providing 12 to 20 beneficiaries per device with purified water every day. ORISA® filters thus offer a sustainable solution to waterborne diseases.
Training teams to empower communities
Training is a key component of the project, enabling SIF teams and partners to master the use and maintenance of ORISA® purifiers. It also gives them the tools to raise awareness among communities, ensure sustainable use and answer beneficiaries' questions. This approach reinforces the impact of the project and promotes the autonomy of local populations.
In total, 1,905 people benefited from the project. Field surveys report: 184 households, 466 pupils and 26 teachers.

The tangible impact of ORISA® water purifiers
Thanks to the deployment of ORISA® water purifiers, beneficiary populations now have access to safe, purified water, significantly reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and dysentery. The purifiers have been deployed in homes, schools and remote areas, providing several litres of drinking water to dozens of people every day.
The beneficiaries testify to the improvement in their daily lives. Ms Ouattara Minata Agnès explains:
‘Before this device arrived, we drank water directly from the well and often fell ill. After purification, the water becomes very clean to drink. We are happy to have this device, thank you to everyone who made this project possible.’
Mr André Diao said:
‘Since we received the device, we have been very happy, because before we had health problems [...] Today we are seeing a decrease in waterborne diseases.’

Feedback from Secours Islamique France: monitoring, use and best practices
Secours Islamique France (SIF) emphasises that ORISA® purifiers have been quickly adopted by beneficiaries and that their daily use is carried out under good conditions. Teams in the field have found that users have a satisfactory understanding of how the purifiers work, particularly with regard to:
- Manual pumping to obtain purified water
- Regular cleaning of the pre-filter
- Backwashing for membrane maintenance
- Replacement or cleaning of the outlet pipe
SIF also emphasises the importance of post-deployment monitoring. Visits take place one month after distribution and are repeated depending on the presence of teams in the area. This follow-up allows for verification of:
- Regular use of the purifiers,
- Proper maintenance operations,
- Filter efficiency and purified water flow,
- Management of lost or broken parts.
In addition, the teams have access to a secure digital after-sales service, provided by Fonto de Vivo, to answer questions and ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the purifiers.
This feedback shows that the combination of training, support and regular follow-up not only ensures the correct use of ORISA®, but also strengthens the sustainability of the project and the autonomy of the communities.
Expertise born from humanitarian experience
ORISA® was designed based on the field experience of former humanitarian worker David Monnier, initially co-founder of the company, and developed in response to specifications established with the involvement of major French and international NGOs: Médecins sans Frontières, French Red Cross, Solidarités International, Médecins du Monde, Handicap International, Terres des Hommes Lausanne, Premières Urgences.
